Tourism

St. Thomas is known as the “Railway Capital of Canada” due to the many railway lines that ran through the city. It is also known for the life-sized monument of Jumbo the Elephant. In 1885, P.T. Barnum’s circus featured an unusually large elephant named Jumbo. Tragically, while in St. Thomas, Jumbo lost his life in a train accident. In 1985 a life-sized monument was erected in memory of Jumbo and is located at the west end of Talbot Street. Additional attractions includes museums, North America Railway Hall of Fame, Pinafore Park and Canada’s first and only elevated park. A 15-minute drive south will bring visitors to Port Stanley on the lake for swimming, recreation and boating. Also St. Thomas, offers a well-developed art, sports & theatre scene.
